90 Days of
Horror
By Dr Kusha
Haracksingh
When the Fatel Razack,
the first ship to bring Indians immigrants to Trinidad, docked at the Port-of Spain harbour in the afternoon of May
30th, 1845, she
was greeted with great with great
enthusiasm. The only regret seemed to be that the ship had not arrived sooner, so that the crop season
which was by then almost at an end could have benefited more from the
immigrants' labour.
There was the
general feeling that the Indians had come to save the colony, and that this was
the first trickle in a steady stream of labour that would rescue the island from
depression and ruin.
As the ship
entered the harbour, it is easy to imagine Indians trying to catch a glimpse of
this strange country, which many of them had been deluded into believing was
some thing of a paradise, only a few days journey from India.
MISTREATMENT
In reality; the
voyage was to last all of 90 days, in
cramped and uncomfortable surroundings.
Five people
were to die on route and many others would experience the horror of prolonged
sea-sickness, the pangs of hunger and cold, and mistreatment at the hands of
the ship’s officers, before their final destination.
As is usually
the case with pioneering ventures many things had yet to be straightened out,
and the first immigrants would be in a sense the guinea pigs of succeeding
voyages, with all the rigours that entailed.
Appropriately
enough, the first name which appeared on the ship's register is Bharat, a
synonym for India. He is described as male, aged twenty.
No other particulars
are available but he was to be the first of over 140,000 Indians who would make
the journey that he had just completed.
Many years
later, an artist would draw a romantic picture of the Fatal Razack, sedately
floating on calm water with full sails billowing in the wind. The reality was
quite different.
The ship was
built of teak and was only of 415 tons burthen, relatively small even by the
standards of those days but especially so for a vessel which had to traverse
two oceans.
By the 1860s
larger ships would come into service and by the 1880s iron ships of about 1,500
tons burthen.
But for those
who travelled in the Fatel Razack and her sister ships, space was at a premium.
Consequently, diseases like cholera and typhoid were easily transmitted and it
is no wonder that there are records of immigrants trying to throw themselves
overboard when the pressures proved too much.
The Fatal
Razack sailed from Calcutta in the closing days of February 1845. By that time, the
immigrants were already confused and
disoriented from their stay in the depot.
There they
encountered strange practices and were thrown
together with people of different caste and religions with whom normally
they would not have mingled.
They underwent
a medical examination, but it was of a cursory nature, intended only to
establish that they could wield an
agricultural implement.
If a man
appeared ill the view was taken that a little
sea breeze would soon correct that. The immigrants were issued with
regulation clothing, and then tagged with a metal disc hung around their necks
or strapped to the arm.
ACCOMMODATION
Thenceforth,
they were merely indentured workers. The process of deculturalisation, or as
some would argue, dehumanisation, had
begun.
On board ship,
the immigrants were in the care of an officer called the Surgeon Superintendent
- in this case, a Major Fagan of the British Indian army. They were divided
into groups of about 25, each controlled by a sardar or headman appointed from
among them.
There was a
complement of cooks drawn from among the highest castes, and of sweepers drawn
from the lowest. The crew were called lascars, an Anglo-Indian word meaning
sailors.
Single women
were placed in the rear of the ship with children and married couples in the
middle.
Single men were
accommodated in the forward area. All slept in the decks below which were
gloomy places lit with coconut oil lamps.
The first stage of the journey, down the Bay of Bengal with its variable winds and into the Indian Ocean to the Cape of Good Hope lasted 41 days.
These first
immigrants were not equipped for the
icy winds and bitter southern seas around the Cape. This was the roughest part of the
voyage. Then the ship steered into the southern trade winds, and later, after St. Helena, caught the north-east trades to bring it
to Trinidad.
As voyages
went, this was not the worst. It could
not compare, for example with the
horror of the Delharee on which 46 Indians died while sailing to Port of Spain. Or with the Fusilier bound from Guyana on which over 200 died.
After docking
in Trinidad, the ship was boarded by the Harbour
Master, the Health Officer and the
newly appointed Agent General of Immigrants.
GOONOO
The human cargo
of 225 was examined and pronounced "in good order and conditions." The
majority were males from their mid-twenties to early thirties, with names like
Dookie, Choudhury, Budhoo. There was a
smattering of women in the same age bracket, with names like Gauri, Etwaria,
Somaria.
The youngest
passengers were a boy called Goonoo, aged 5, and a girl named Faizan, aged 4.
These last
immigrants were put to work on the estates the day after their arrival. One
week later the Port of Spain Gazette claimed they were “giving much
satisfaction to their employers.”

Indian
Immigrant Ship List to Trinidad
The tables below are a
listing of ships known to have carried Indian immigrants to Trinidad. This list was compiled by
Richard Cheddie, who graciously consented to their reproduction here. A more
complete list that includes ships to other colonies can be accessed by joining
his Indo-West Indian Discussion Group called Batchaman.
I have divided these
lists by time period to make reviewing them simpler.

The Rhine , was a 1,691 ton, iron sailing
ship with a length
of 257.2 feet, breadth of 38.3 feet and depth of 23.1 feet. She was built by
Russel & Company, Port Glasgow for the Nourse Line,
named after the River Rhine which starts in Switzerland
and flows via Germany
and the Netherlands
to the North
Sea, and launched in 10 December 1885. She was primarily used for the transportation of Indian indentured
labourers to the colonies. Details of some of these voyages are as follows:
The Rhine was sold by the Nourse Line in 1907
and passed through a number of owners. It was initially sold to R.C. Williams
of New
Brunswick, Canada,
then in 1909 it was sold to W.H. Chandler, who operated the ship as Rhine
Shipping Company, Montreal, Canada.
In 1911 the Rhine Shipping Company was sold to G.I. Dewar of Montreal,
Canada, then in 1915 it
was sold to new owners in Boston, then was sold once more to W. McKissock of Boston
and finally in 1923 was sold to E.P. Reiss of Boston
for use as a barge.
